The White Gold Screen a collaboration with film maker Ana Brape

Sound design and construction of eight DIY electronic sound devices for Ana Brape's installation, "The Gold White scream". DAD, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 2018.

The White Gold Screen is an ongoing exploration revolving around the question how does one decolonises film?

The White Gold Screen installation is integrated by three works:

Cartography of the Body, a super buried 8mm film Ana buried at the Botanical Gardens in Amsterdam. The film was under the soil for seven months before digging it up again. The projected result being ‘a co-creation with nature’.

The Migrating Film, a 16mm film Ana took with, on her journeys migrating from country to country. Doing so the film was exposed to airport x-ray systems more than 12 times

A Thousand Broken Pieces, a screen made of multiple pieces of porcelain.

The architectural design of the octagonal projection room is based on the shape of the Chakana, a geometric shape often found in ceramics, weavings and monuments along the Andes Mountain Range. The Chakana symbolizes the southern cross constellation, a millenarian navigation tool.

Sound proposal:

For the collaboration in Ana Brape’s White Gold Screen installation, Juan Orozco developed a sound proposal based on eight independent DIY sound devices.

Juan Orozco build what he calls “short sound esquisophonic memories/mediums” specially for the installation, during the days he shared with Ana in Amsterdam.

Departing from technology limits, each device is capable to record just up to 10 seconds of sound, they can also amplify a microphone or other sensors, and be triggered by light, vibration, or sound itself.

They are open and dynamic devices that can be easily manipulated an modify their behavior in any moment.

6 of the 8 devices are set up inside on different points of “the Chakana”, and two outside.

They can perform alone, together or in groups of two, three, etc, etc.

The aim of the sound proposal is to reinforce the idea of non linear time, no hierarchy, solidarity-complementary principle, dialogue, and how things that are apparently far away and independent, get close, communicate and are part of the same space-world-cosmogony.
